December 16, 2017. Chula Vista, CA. (Olympian High School) – The Bonita Vista Barons (6-2) came into this 2nd game in the Grossmont Winter Classic on as good of a run as the Escondido Cougars (6-1) and both teams were eager to add another win.
Escondido came out shooting well, making all four of their first four attempts and put up a respectable 16 points in the quarter. But it was McDaniel of the Barons, with four long shots in five possessions plus two other scores (16 points total) that gave his team the lead at the end of the period, 20-16.
Bonita Vista started the 2nd period with a 9-0 run, then Green went on a 7-0 run of his own, bringing the Cougars back within 6. Ultimately the period belonged to Mendoza of the Barons, who had 10 points and led his team to a 12-point advantage at the half, 37-25. Sauls was injured wrestling over a loose ball and would have to sit out the rest of the game – and, as it turned out, the next game as well.
Escondido made some progress in the 3rd period, with help from three 3-pointers from Jones and back-to-back layups from Barber. They trailed 40-47 going into the final period.
Escondido didn’t have a single turnover in the 4th period, while their defense got Bonita Vista to commit 6 of them. Hutchison and Fox scored 5 points each and Green and Landry had 4 each. Yet Escondido shot 25% from the field overall, while Bonita Vista shot 55%. That was enough to deliver the Cougars their second loss of the season, 60-65.
