Cougar Wrestling Begins League Competition

The Cougar wrestling team opened the new year with a dual meet against Valley League favorite the Jaguars of Valley Center.

The varsity dual had huge Valley League title implications. The dual began at 160lb. and saw Senior Andres Flores get the Cougars started off big with a 6 point pin, to put the Cougars up 6-0. After a last second decision victory for the Jaguars at 170lb. the Cougars led 6-3. At 182lb. Mason Malone put together a big upset pin fall victory against the CIF Division 4's #1 ranked wrestler to extend the Cougars lead to 12-3. Junior Antonio Ramirez added to the lead with his 1st period pin at 195lb. Cougars lead was extended to 18-3. The 220lb. match was the premiere match of the night as it pitted two top 4 wrestlers in San Diego County. Valley Center bumped up the #4 wrestler in the county at 195lb. to 220lb. to wrestler Escondido's Anthony Douglas who is ranked #4 at 220lb. The move backfired on Valley Center as Douglas was victorious 5-3 which added to Escondido's lead 21-3. Heavyweight Senior Zeke Rodriguez helped the Cougars extend their lead to 24-3 after his decision victory. Valley Center recorded a pin fall at 106lb. to make the score 24-6. Escondido's Isaac Munoz received a forfeit victory at 113lb. which made the score 30-6. Valley Center got a pin fall at 120lb. Senior Raymond Felix was able to get back the 6 points VC received in the previous match with second period pin to make the score 36-12 for Escondido. Valley Center closed the gap to 36-27 after reeling off 3 victories at 132lb. 138lb. & 145lb. Senior Jesus Barajas capped the night off with a pin fall victory to add 6 points to the Cougar's score and seal Valley Center's fate.

To begin the night the JV & Women's team took to the mat. It was a closely contested battle which saw the young Cougar team's record fall to 0-2 on the dual season after the 18-24 loss.
